FAQ
Calibration standards (e.g. PlasmaCAL) are pure solutions used for instrument calibration. Matrix reference materials resemble real sample matrices (soil, plant tissue, water) and are used for method validation, matrix effect assessment, and QC programs.
The matrix reference material is sent simultaneously to multiple accredited laboratories for analysis. Results are statistically processed to determine a consensus value and confidence interval. This approach produces more reliable reference values than single-laboratory certification.
ISO/IEC 17025 requires demonstration of measurement accuracy. For soil or biological matrix analysis, using certified matrix reference materials is the most effective way to meet this requirement. Assessors typically ask which reference materials are used in the QC program.
