Built for High-Throughput
Production Environments

AreX combines a 3000 W generator, the Dectris Mythen2 R 1D detector, and a Mo anode to determine retained austenite in under three minutes, in full compliance with ASTM E 975-03.

3000 W X-Ray Generator
High generator power directly reduces measurement time. Supports large sample volumes in quality control workflows; waiting time is minimized between measurements.
🔬
Mo Anode + Zr Filter
The Mo tube and Zr filter combination minimizes overlap between ferrite (BCC/BCT) and austenite (FCC) diffraction peaks. The four-peak method defined in ASTM E 975-03 achieves its highest accuracy with this anode-filter pair.
📡
Dectris Mythen2 R 1D Detector
Silicon strip detector based on single-photon counting technology. Simultaneously records a wide angular range; provides noise-free performance and high dynamic range. Measurement time drops from hours to minutes.
GNR AreX D — World's First Desktop Retained Austenite XRD System

World's First Desktop
Retained Austenite XRD

AreX D fits on a standard laboratory bench at 490×550×360 mm and 37 kg. Its air-cooled design requires no external water supply; there is no cooling infrastructure to install.

🔋
50 W Air-Cooled Design
No water cooling infrastructure required. A standard 110/220 V mains connection is sufficient. Significantly reduces installation cost for small and medium-sized laboratories.
🎯
1% Accuracy in 180 Seconds
Typical measurement time is 180 seconds; retained austenite volume fraction is determined to 1% accuracy. Angular range 21.5°–44.5° (2θ); the four peaks required by ASTM E 975-03 are captured within this range.
🔷
Full Safety Enclosure
Steel frame, lead X-ray shielding, and door interlock keep operator safety at the highest level. Video camera-assisted alignment speeds up sample positioning and reduces setup time.

AreX or AreX D?

Both systems share the Dectris Mythen2 R 1D detector and ASTM E 975-03 compliance. The choice depends on sample throughput, installation space, and available infrastructure.

Industries and
Use Cases

🚗
Automotive & Gear Manufacturing
Post-hardening heat treatment quality control on gears, bearings, camshafts, axles, and shafts. Retained austenite monitoring provides direct data for optimizing production parameters.
Tool Steels
Verification of EDM, carburizing, nitriding, and induction hardening processes. Phase distribution after treatment is measured quantitatively; dimensional instability risk is identified before parts leave the production line.
🏭
AHSS & TRIP Steels
Austenite stabilization control in advanced high-strength steel production. The volume fraction and homogeneity of retained austenite used as a structural component in TRIP steels is confirmed batch by batch.
🔩
Springs & Fasteners
Measurement of phase transformations affecting fatigue performance, and pre-service quality assurance. Uncontrolled retained austenite in the surface layer reduces fatigue life; measurement eliminates this risk.
🔬
Research & Development
Characterization of new alloys and heat treatment processes. Provides fast, reproducible data on austenite stability studies; shortens the R&D cycle without compromising measurement integrity.
Bearing Industry
Hardening quality control in ball and roller bearing production. Retained austenite content directly determines dimensional instability and premature wear risk; measurement has become a standard requirement for each production batch.
Quality Assurance
Routine QA/QC process control on the production floor. The compact footprint of AreX D integrates into existing quality laboratories without additional infrastructure investment.
🏗
Casting & Forging
Phase analysis after heat treatment of heavy machinery components. AreX's 110×150 mm sample holder capacity and short measurement time make high-throughput inspection practical on large workpieces.

Common Questions

AreX is a full-scale system with a 3000 W generator, designed for high-sample-volume production environments. AreX D is the world's first desktop XRD system for retained austenite determination; at 50 W, air-cooled, and 37 kg, it is the preferred choice for laboratories with limited space or without external water cooling infrastructure.

Both systems comply with ASTM E 975-03. This standard defines the four-peak method, which calculates retained austenite volume fraction by comparing the integrated intensities of ferrite and austenite diffraction peaks against theoretical values.

AreX D is entirely air-cooled; no external water supply is needed and a standard 110/220 V mains connection is sufficient. The AreX model uses a water-cooled X-ray tube; contact our technical team for site infrastructure requirements.

AreX D determines retained austenite volume fraction to 1% accuracy in a typical measurement time of 180 seconds. The angular range is 21.5°–44.5° (2θ); the Mo anode and Zr filter provide the intensity and resolution required for the ASTM E 975-03 four-peak method across this range.

All steel grades with sufficient crystallinity can be analyzed: ferritic, martensitic, austenitic, TRIP, AHSS, and tool steels. Metallographic polishing is not required for retained austenite measurement; representative surface preparation is sufficient.
