XRD Retained Austenite Analysis Systems
GNR AreX and AreX D quantitatively determine retained austenite content in steel samples by X-ray diffraction (XRD) in full compliance with ASTM E 975-03. AreX for high-throughput production environments, AreX D for compact laboratory installations.
GNR AreX
AreX combines a 3000 W generator, the Dectris Mythen2 R 1D detector, and a Mo anode to determine retained austenite in under three minutes, in full compliance with ASTM E 975-03.
GNR AreX D
AreX D fits on a standard laboratory bench at 490×550×360 mm and 37 kg. Its air-cooled design requires no external water supply; there is no cooling infrastructure to install.
Comparison
Both systems share the Dectris Mythen2 R 1D detector and ASTM E 975-03 compliance. The choice depends on sample throughput, installation space, and available infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions
AreX is a full-scale system with a 3000 W generator, designed for high-sample-volume production environments. AreX D is the world's first desktop XRD system for retained austenite determination; at 50 W, air-cooled, and 37 kg, it is the preferred choice for laboratories with limited space or without external water cooling infrastructure.
Both systems comply with ASTM E 975-03. This standard defines the four-peak method, which calculates retained austenite volume fraction by comparing the integrated intensities of ferrite and austenite diffraction peaks against theoretical values.
AreX D is entirely air-cooled; no external water supply is needed and a standard 110/220 V mains connection is sufficient. The AreX model uses a water-cooled X-ray tube; contact our technical team for site infrastructure requirements.
AreX D determines retained austenite volume fraction to 1% accuracy in a typical measurement time of 180 seconds. The angular range is 21.5°–44.5° (2θ); the Mo anode and Zr filter provide the intensity and resolution required for the ASTM E 975-03 four-peak method across this range.
All steel grades with sufficient crystallinity can be analyzed: ferritic, martensitic, austenitic, TRIP, AHSS, and tool steels. Metallographic polishing is not required for retained austenite measurement; representative surface preparation is sufficient.
