Gas Pycnometer · True Density Analyzer
BetterPyc 380 is an automatic benchtop gas pycnometer that measures volume, true density, solid content and open cell content with 0.0001 g/cm³ accuracy using the gas displacement method. Compatible with helium or nitrogen; compliant with USP, Ph. Eur., ISO 12154 and ASTM standards.
Measurement Principle
The sample is placed in a sealed chamber. Measurement gas is applied at a set pressure; as gas expands into a reference chamber, the pressure change is recorded. True volume and density are calculated directly from this data.
Software & Automation
EasyPyc (v3.20+) manages all four measurement functions from a single interface. SOP support and balance integration reduce operator input to a minimum.
Applications
Frequently Asked Questions
BetterPyc 380 operates with either helium or nitrogen as the measurement gas. Helium's small molecular size allows it to penetrate the finest pores, providing more accurate volume measurements. Nitrogen is a cost-effective alternative where helium supply is limited. The choice depends on the sample type and applicable standard.
The instrument handles a broad range of material forms: solids, powders, porous solids, suspensions and semi-solids. It is used across pharmaceuticals, metal powders, ceramics, plastic foams, food powders and construction materials, among other industries.
BetterPyc 380 is compliant with DIN 66137-2, ISO 12154, USP (United States Pharmacopeia), Ph. Eur. (European Pharmacopoeia) and ASTM. This broad standard coverage makes it suitable for regulated environments, particularly pharmaceutical QC laboratories.
EasyPyc (v3.20+) manages all four measurement functions from a single platform. It reads mass from a connected balance automatically, supports SOPs to ensure procedural consistency, and controls an external water bath for temperature-sensitive measurements. Automatic calibration and leak testing are also handled within the software.
BetterPyc 380 achieves a density accuracy of 0.0001 g/cm³. This is the result of high-resolution pressure transducers, integrated temperature control and calibrated chamber volumes working together. Automatic leak detection before each run ensures that no compromised measurement passes through.
